You’ve Got To Be ‘Cruel’ To Be Kind!

It’s interesting to observe how many pet owners are initially very hesitant to train their dog. However, most people change their minds once they realize that in order for your dog to enjoy certain freedoms, he must first have some restrictions until he is properly behaved.

For example, when it comes to keeping their dog in a crate when they are unable to supervise, many people feel sorry for their dog. Likewise, having to tell their dog “no” when he does things such as beg at the table or jump up for greetings, pulls on the heartstrings of some people because “he looks so cute.”

The problem is, when your dog is not taught how to behave properly, he may actually end up with quite a bit less freedom than if you had trained him! For example, an obedient dog can be allowed to run off the leash at the park and play Frisbee because you can trust that he will come when called. Conversely, if he is not trained well enough, he will have to stay on a leash because otherwise he might run away.

Referencing the above examples, a dog who has been properly crate trained is far more likely to eventually be trusted with free run of the house because he has not developed bad habits such as chewing furniture or having accidents. The canine who does not beg or jump up is more likely to be allowed to join the party when you have guests. The examples could truly go on and on!

This does not mean that your dog needs to be trained to extremely high “militant” standards. Some basic obedience training, such as the “heel” (walk at my side), “sit,” “down,” and “stay” commands as well as basic manners such as not jumping, nipping, chewing, or barking excessively will translate into an overall well-behaved pet who you can enjoy more. And he can enjoy more freedoms too!
